Problems

How do I know if I have a problem with my router? I frequently lose internet access but it does say "internet access" but I can't get on. I have asked my neighbours and they say they don't get the same thing. My router is probably about 4 years old but I'm not sure how you tell whether the problem is caused by the router?
Thanks

It sounds like you're using

It sounds like you're using Windows, which is saying you have internet access when you don't. This is a "feature" of Windows, particularly versions before Windows 7. The incorrect message is causing confusion, but the problem is real.

You don't say if you are using wireless, but it is likely that your connection to the router is okay, it is just that the router is losing internet access. If the router has a modem built in and a restart of the router solves the problem then you may need a new router. Some routers do just cease working after a period of time.
If you have a separate modem to your router, then the router is probably fine and you'll want to restart the modem and see if that resolves the problem. If it does then check the ventilation of your modem.
If the restarts don't solve your problem then talk to your ISP, they can make various adjustments to improve the stability of your connection.
Good luck
