Linksys unveils 2 new AC1900 routers and a wireless AC adapter
12th September 2013
Linksys has revealed its latest wireless AC router. The Smart Wi-Fi AC1900 (or EA6900), is the new top model in their range and is the fastest Linksys router to date.
The AC1900 has an 800MHz dual-core processor meaning it can be quicker and more responsive. It supports wireless N speeds up to 600Mbps, and speeds up to 1300Mbps on wireless AC. The EA6900 has USB3.0 connectivity and 4gigabit ethernet ports. It also brings Linksys up to speed with other manufacturers and provides a free app for iOS and Android to remotely access your network.
The wireless N speed increase to 600Mbps is particularly interesting. EA6900 uses Broadcom's 256 QAM chipset which can deliver 200Mbps per partial stream (vs the 150Mbps per partial stream of the existing 64QAM chipset). Thus the top speed can only be achieved when the router works with clients that support the same hardware.
The AC1900 will be available in the UK from October and will retail for £199. Though, you'll struggle to find an adapter to take full advantage of the full AC speeds until 2014.
Before then though, those desperate for wireless AC action can check out a lower end Linksys router which also supports USB3.0 The Smart Wi-Fi AC900 Router (EA6200) runs at 300Mbps for 802.11n clients and at up to 867Mbps for 802.11ac clients. It is available immediately and is yours for £99.
Also available is the WUSB6300 wireless AC USB adapter which offers speeds of up to 867Mbps at 5GHz and up to 300Mbps at 2.4GHz. It is available now for £59.
