Netgear announces WNR3500L

7th October 2009.

Netgear announced the lauch of their WNR3500L wireless router, or to give it its full and rather grandiose title: The RangeMax(tM) Wireless-N Gigabit Router with USB.

Netgear WNR3500L

This latest broadband router offering sports 802.11n performance wireless along with four Gigabit Ethernet ports and ReadyShare USB (2.0) storage access. So far so standard for a modern router. The twist comes in that the WNR3500L also serves as an Linux platform, with Netgear claiming that this will allow the opensource community and development partners to develop applications for "this powerful platform." That power is provided by a 480MHz MIPS 74K CPU with 8MB of flash and 64MB of RA.M

We're not entirely sure whether we'd really want to run 3rd party software on our router, given that your router is the heart of your network, your internet access point, and if you're using the USB NAS, your connection to your data. Still, we're keen to see some really cool apps come along and change our minds.

The current software offerings are all available at: http://www.myopenrouter.com

The Netgear WNR3500L is available "Autumn 2009", comes with a one-year warranty and the RRP in the US is $139.99, so about £87 ish.
