Each router or modem router examined in our reviews is given a star rating. This page explains how these ratings are arrived at.
Our ratings are worked out on based on both the technical specifications of the wireless n routers and real-world experience.

The technical specifications that are taken into account are:

•   Which wireless n standard is used - (draft, draft 2.0, or full standard)
•   Speed of wireless link
•   Reliability of wireless link
•   Strength of wireless link (distance)
•   Other connectivity built-in
•   Security Standards

The technical specs are combined with ease-of-use and other real-world factors to give our ratings which are given out of 5 stars. Five stars being the best and zero stars the worst.

Our star ratings are explained below.

 Stars   Meaning 
 no stars  Terrible - this is a really bad product and one to avoid if you can possibly help it. Sometimes used for routers whose features are listed, but we have yet to review.
 one star  Bad - although it has some redeeming features, you should look for alternatives
 two stars  Average - this product is okay and will work well as a wireless n router
 three stars  Good - this is a strong product with some features that make it stand out from the competition
 four stars  Great - this is a great wireless n router with excellent features and good reliability
 five stars  Fabulous - this is an incredile router in a league of its own. What are you waiting for?
